ABSTRACT
Over the course of his career, James W. Fesler (1911–2005) made remarkable contributions to teaching, institution building, and scholarship, especially through his seminal book Area and Administration. During World War II, he served as historian of the War Production Board and then, as chair of the Yale University Department of Political Science, played a major role in shaping a department that defined much of the modern discipline of political science.
