ABSTRACT

Chris Argryis (1923–2013) was a pioneering academic and management expert. He has been called the father of organizational learning. A prolific researcher and author, he began by looking at the conflict between the needs of the individual versus the organization. He went on to examine how individuals learn, and the obstacles they face in the process, both internally and externally. Argyris developed an action science approach highlighting the two conflicting models in which people formulate and follow their own “theory-in-use” about what they are doing and why. He is also remembered as an outstanding teacher with a long career at both Yale and Harvard.
