ABSTRACT

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires local governments to create and maintain written hazard mitigation plans, in accordance with federal guidance, as a prerequisite to receiving several categories of federal disaster assistance including hazard mitigation grants. The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, Public Law 106-390, is an amendment to the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act of 1982, Public Law 93-288, which had previously required only states to have hazard mitigation plans as a prerequisite to federal mitigation funding.
