ABSTRACT

The Forth Road Bridge (FRB) (Figures 5.1 and 5.2) is a long-span suspension bridge and was opened in September 1964. At the time of opening, the bridge had the fourth longest main span (1006 m) in the world. The bridges that had longer spans than FRB were Golden Gate, Mackinac Straits, and George Washington. All these three bridges are in the United States, so the FRB was the first long-span bridge to be built outside the United States.
