ABSTRACT

More than 53% of the renewable energy consumed in Germany is generated from biomass, predominantly wood, and the trend is upward. Research has focused on the utilization of woody biomass and neglected the issues and challenges confronting the actors in the biomass value added and supply chain. Biomass suppliers and consumers are usually unaware of the share of total supply costs incurred by complex logistics and indirect costs. Hence, holistic logistics concepts and bases for planning are needed to supply biomass cost effectively and sustainably as cross-company value added.
