ABSTRACT
Aquaculture in Europe and Asia has a long history and many developments in aquaculture have taken place recently, especially within the last 200 years. Several historical scenarios have been developed that might have contributed to the early developments of aquaculture. These include the possible use of natural or artifi cial water bodies for early fi sheries or husbandry attempts (Rabanal 1988). The earliest developments in aquaculture are assumed to have taken place at least 2000 years ago (Rabanal 1988). Nevertheless, the precise time as well as the process of emergence of aquaculture still remains unclear, although it almost certainly had been developed independently under different conditions at different locations.
