ABSTRACT

Chronic wounds are referred to wounds in which the progress of healing through the normal stages is interrupted by a state of pathologic infl ammation. As a result, the healing process is delayed, incomplete, and uncoordinated. Chronic wounds represent a signifi cant cause of morbidity and mortality for a large portion of the population and result in enormous

health care expenditures with annual costs estimated in billion of dollars. Most ulcers are caused by ischemia, secondary to diabetes mellitus, venous stasis, and pressure.
