ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The Vikings are known to have arrived in the Wirral and West Lancashire over 1000 years ago. Until recently, the evidence of this has come from archaeological, linguistic and textual sources. Recently another source of evidence has presented itself: a genetic signal of their presence may exist in the DNA of those who live in the area today. This paper discusses a pilot project which sought to do just that: investigate if any genetic traces of the Viking migration to the area could be found among the modern population of the Wirral and West Lancashire.
