ABSTRACT

Anatomy The normal adult prostate is a walnut-sized organ situated between the bladder and the muscles of the pelvic floor. As the urethra exits from the bladder, it courses caudally and anteriorly through the long axis of the prostate. The cranial aspect of the prostate just under the bladder is denoted as the base of the prostate. The base of the prostate is clearly defined against the bladder by sonography. The apex of the prostate, adjacent to the muscles of the pelvic floor, is situated just posterior to the pubic symphysis. The apex of the prostate merges into the corpora spongiosum without a well-defined sonographic landmark to define the inferior margin of the prostate.
