ABSTRACT
Acute renal insufficiency is a sudden decline in renal function. There are no standard definitions. This chapter discusses life-threatening acute renal failure when the renal function falls towards zero. In the UK, about 50 people per million population develop acute renal failure requiring dialysis each year. Acute renal failure complicates about 5% of admissions to hospital and 30% of admissions to intensive care.
