Cold plasma has been used for decades in material science research for polymer surface modifications. Cold plasma has been known to be used for surface functionalization, etching, deposition, and surface activation phenomena. The utilization of these techniques to manage the various limitations of traditional polymers used in the food packaging industry gave a new perspective to the cold plasma research. Cold plasma has been used for surface activation to improve adhesive and printing properties of the polymers. It has also been used for surface deposition to either add bioactive layers on the polymer surface or other layers to improve its barrier properties. Cold plasma has also been used for surface sterilization of various materials. In view of these developments, it is safe to assume that cold plasma shows promising applications for food packaging in the future.
