A widespread approach for synthesizing nanoparticles and thin films is plasma-based methods in which the growth environment and dynamics are crucial for the characteristics and properties of the resulting materials. Within this framework, pulsed plasmas can provide added means of controlling the growth dynamics by, for example, affecting the nucleation and coagulation phase and thereby creating nanoparticles and thin films with nanoscale precision. In this entry, an introduction to the synthesis of nanoparticles and thin films by pulsed plasmas is given with emphasis on the growth dynamics.
