ABSTRACT

Plasmonics is an active and growing applied research field that encompasses phenomena related to the interaction between light and free carriers in materials—usually electrons in metals. This entry will cover the fundamentals of plasmonics, including a discussion of bulk plasmons, propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), and localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances, as well as selected applications in the fields of chemical and biological sensing, solar energy, optical systems, and medicine.
