ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Many serious and fatal injuries occur as a result of falls on stairs. Falls associated with defects in the design, construction, and maintenance of the stairway, rather than the behavior of the user (which is difficult to control), are discussed. Some guiding human factors principles concerning adequate visual information, consistent step geometry, and adequacy of handrails are addressed.
