ABSTRACT

The proportion of all pregnancies occurring in WWE is, nevertheless, broadly in keeping with the incidence of epilepsy in the general population: in a region of the United Kingdom, 0.61% of all pregnancies over a 2-year period were in WWE (14); over a 19-year period, 0.33% of all pregnancies in Iceland were in WWE (15). Guidelines for the management of WWE emphasise the need for preconception advice, including the need to plan pregnancies, take folate and maintain appropriate contact with an epilepsy specialist. In a U.K. population-based series, only about half the WWE planned their pregnancies and 38% recalled preconception counselling (14); in a U.S. tertiary centre-based series, there was lack of preconception contact with a neurologist in 85%, and lack of contact with a neurologist during pregnancy in 36% (16).
