ABSTRACT

A prerequisite for developing the concept in Central Europe in the 1990’s was a surplus of low-graded timber produced by the sawm ills. The sawmill industry recognised the need to refine sim ple sawn tim ber products, which they had difficulties to sell, and investm ents were made in research and development, as has been previously described (e.g. Schickhofer and Hasewend, 2000 and Falk, 2005). This research effort aim ed at and resulted in two product groups – stacked planks (Brettsta pelholz) and cross-lam inated tim ber (Brettsperrholz) and an implemented industrial manufacturing method for these product types.
