ABSTRACT

The history, materials, and assemblies of heritage structures present a number of unique challenges in their evaluation, conservation, rehabilitation and restoration. For the structural engineer involved in conservation of built heritage there is value in the integrity of the hidden components as they represent increasingly rare examples of the building technology of their time. Conservation engineers find interest in the bones of the building that are quite often displayed in basements and attics, whereas these aspects may only be of secondary interest to other conservation experts.
