ABSTRACT

Fluid therapy is one of the most commonly employed therapies in veterinary medicine. Treatment of a variety of diseases may employ some form of fluid therapy. Fluids are drugs and have many potential benefits and possible side-effects. It is important to tailor a specific fluid plan to each individual patient. The goals of this chapter are to introduce the types of fluids available, describe the characteristics of different fluid types, develop a fluid plan, and discuss specific clinical situations that present particular challenges in using fluids.
