ABSTRACT

STRESS Most of us have experienced stress in our lives. I am sure you can recall a close call, perhaps when a child ran out in front of your car and you swerved to avoid hitting her. Your autonomic nervous system kicks into high gear. Your adrenal glands produce an increase of adrenaline. Your heart races, your pulse quickens, there is a rise in your blood pressure, you begin to perspire, you have an increase of saliva production, and you may feel your face flush and feel a bit light headed. Our body prepares for fight or flight and automatically responds at a physiological level.
