ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION In this chapter we will explore by case example the family system, how the family system operated before the loved one’s traumatic brain injury, and how it is impacted by the recovery process, in particular when the survivor returns home. We will integrate our knowledge that the change exacted to the family system because of a family member’s brain injury has produced stress and that any member of the family including the survivor may be exhibiting stress symptoms. We will review family systems and propose that the family is at risk and may begin to create a new dysfunctional dynamic, further complicating and jeopardizing the client’s therapeutic outcome as well as the family unit.
