ABSTRACT

Phylogenetic trees depicting evolutionary relationships and classifi cations based on these relationships are the central underpinning of research in biology (Baum and Smith 2013). Within a phylogenetic framework, it is possible to study the pattern and process of evolution of morphological, physiological and genetic traits among organisms, and it allows interpreting biogeographic patterns within an historical perspective. It also provides guidelines for conservation and management of natural resources such as fi sheries.
