ABSTRACT

Urbanization is the transition from a rural-agrarian to an urban-industrial society. Globally, the level of urbanization is expected to rise from 47% in 2000 to 69% in 2050 (Figure 2.1). us, the world urban population is expected to increase by 72%, from 3.6 billion in 2011 to 6.3 billion in 2050 [32] in both developed and developing countries. Urbanization promotes rapid social and economic development, but at the same time, leads to

many problems, such as concentration of the population, trac jams, housing shortages, resource shortages, biodiversity reductions, “heat island” eects, noise, and air and water pollution [13].
