ABSTRACT

Most of the devices that make up a power generation and distribution environment are based on a small number of fundamental electrical components. Understanding these components is critical to being able to understand the operation of electrical substations and generators. In order to provide a common language for a sustainability discussion, this chapter covers the specific components of an electrical supply and distribution system for a common industrial site. The health and safety aspects of each part of the electrical system are discussed from a scientific standpoint, explaining the rationale for the safety implementation. The relevant health and safety regulations are also presented and explained in light of the scientific basis for the regulations.
