ABSTRACT

Abstract: This chapter examines several interesting directions for future research related to indoor wayfinding and navigation tools to assist blind travelers. In the short term, limitations of localization techniques can be improved by incorporating a variety of sensors and crowdsourcing into the localization framework. In addition, user interfaces can be improved with simpler gestures, clearer audio feedback, enhanced landmark lists, and more customizable instructions to enhance accessibility. Finally, effective representations of large-scale floor plans, appropriate maps, and efficient pathplanning algorithms must be explored for enhanced route planning.
