ABSTRACT

As everywhere in the world harmful algae blooms (HAB) appear to be spreading in Africa either as a result of increased monitoring efforts and/ or new introductions. The continent is subject to frequent blooms of toxic microalgae strains such as Gymnodinium catenatum and various Alexandrium spp. which cause contamination of molluscan shellfi sh and even cause human poisoning and socio economic losses due to the harvesting banning by authorities.
