ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on several developments in technology that have promise to advance further toward the goal. To put the discussion that follows into perspective, it is important to understand the activity of wayfinding and how it relates to use of public transportation systems. The cost of the smartpen technology is much lower than Remote Infrared Audible Sign (RIAS) and this is an attractive option where it is desirable to provide special assistance for visually impaired travelers, for example, in a particularly complex transit terminal. The system remembers the last ticket purchase associated with a user account and displays that for the first choice. Localization is a process in which an individual obtains data from known locations and uses it to estimate their location. Navigational software uses a similar process by obtaining information from digital sources in the vicinity and estimating location by referring to a "map" represented by a database of know locations.
