ABSTRACT

At present, the usable quantities of CO2 are considerably smaller than its emissions from power generation and other sources. On the most optimistic front, it is estimated that chemical industries can convert at most around 6-7% of global emissions for bulk and fine chemical manufacture and 10% into synthetic fuels. The demand is likely to increase on long-term basis. Notwithstanding this, the utilization of CO2 is still a welcome measure on a medium term basis as part of global strategy to create economic value for it and minimize its environmental impact as a greenhouse gas. Also significant drawbacks are associated with CCS option to capture CO2 from industrial scale power plants and store it in geological formations. They include unforeseen leakages, long-term liability, problems with public acceptance and high cost of CO2 capture.
