ABSTRACT
Introduction On a global scale, the manufacturing output in Sub-Saharan Africa is the lowest of any region in the world, except the Middle East. Similarly, Sub-Saharan Africa ranks at the bottom of all regions in contributions to global trade on manufactured products. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to rely mostly on the export of raw materials and commodities to support their economies. According to a KPMG report on manufacturing in Africa (KPMG 2014), instead of growing and expanding the manufacturing sector, since 1996 the number of manufacturing enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa has been shrinking. Even among the manufacturing enterprises that exist, most are at the small scale level and lacked the capital, skilled labor, and technical knowledge to compete at the global level.
