ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates contemporary themes in teleradiology. Teleradiology services used for primary diagnosis are classified as either intramural or extramural. To enhance understanding, contextual information on clinical teleradiology, the digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) standard, digital image fundamentals, and monitor characteristics is also presented. DICOM is considered to be a key determinant of the success of teleradiology. The widespread use of DICOM has realized a standardized image file format and transfer protocol, resulting in interoperability between equipment vendors and institutions. The practice of radiology has drastically changed over recent years due in a large part to the secondary effects of teleradiology. The suitability of these devices for teleradiology needs to be considered in the context of their use for either primary diagnosis or clinical review. The influence teleradiology has had on reshaping the practice of radiology as a whole was established.
