ABSTRACT

AO was first proposed in astronomy, to enable ground-based telescopes to overcome the deleterious effects of atmospheric turbulence [1], and for many years the technique was restricted to large engineering teams in astronomy and military applications [2]. In fact, AO is rather straightforward in principle and is now increasingly used in vision science, microscopy, and other applications. Of the several books currently available, Hardy [3] is authoritative, Tyson [4] is comprehensive, and Porter et al. [5] cover applications in vision science.
