ABSTRACT

The primary optical function of the lens is to allow the eye to accommodate, but age-dependent changes in shape and gradient also play a key role in the optics of the eye over the entire lifespan. Lens growth in childhood is a key factor in the development of the refractive state of the eye. In adulthood, lens growth results in a progressive loss of balance between corneal and internal ocular aberrations that deteriorates retinal image quality.
