ABSTRACT

The definition of health services research (HSR) is constantly evolving; however, in general it can be defined as “a multidisciplinary field of scientific investigation that studies how social factors, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, and personal behaviours affect access to healthcare, the quality and cost of healthcare, and ultimately our health and well-being. Its research domains are individuals, families, organizations, institutions, communities, and populations.1” The intent of HSR is to generate knowledge about health system performance by assessing its effectiveness, efficiency and equity.
