ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter 2, biotechnology has many applications including agricultural biotechnology, otherwise referred to as “green biotechnology.” Agricultural biotechnology includes plant, animal, and food biotechnologies since agriculture in a proper sense includes both plant and animal production, and food is generally obtained from plant and animal resources. A number of biotechnological techniques have been used in agriculture to augment different traits of plants and animals. These techniques aimed at increasing quantities of plant and animal products, as well as improving their qualitative attributes. The last few decades witnessed many developments in the application of biotechnology in the eld of agriculture and food. A number of eld crops had their genetic make-up altered to achieve certain desirable characteristics to help improve production in addition to enhancing some quality factors. GM foods are produced from such GM crops, or they include ingredients derived from GMOs or GM plants.
