ABSTRACT

Tables 10.1 and 13.1 and Figures 13.1 and 13.2 present the statistical characteristics of CLC2012 classes. An overview of areas of CLC2012 classes in Europe is provided in Table 10.1. In this data layer the Forest landscape area again increased and (CLC classes 311-324) covers 2,227,996.7 km2, corresponding to 43.9% of the area of the European land cover (see Table 10.1). As in CLC2006, as far as size is concerned, they are followed by Open space with little or no vegetation (CLC classes 331-335), with an area of 228,199.0 km2 equating to 4.5%. The area of Artificial surfaces (CLC classes 111-142) increased to 223,684.7 km2, or 4.4%. The Wetlands (CLC classes 411-423) occupy an area of 143,467.7 km2, or 2.8%. Water bodies (CLC classes 511-522), with an area 138,061.6 km2, or 2.7%, are the smallest.
