ABSTRACT

Soldiers faces a stream of refugees at a military checkpoint. People are allowed to pass freely once they’ve been searched. The rationale for the searches is straightforward and unsurprising as there has been a recent upsurge in local activity by insurgents. But the searches are seen as an affront to human dignity: many fi nd them degrading and intrusive. Inevitably the checkpoint becomes a locus for resentment, anger, hostility and occasional violence.
