ABSTRACT

This Chapter introduces the basics of optical fiber sensors (OFS). It attempts to give an overview of the most common optical fiber sensing techniques, starting from an explanation of basic interactions between optical signals and physical quantities on which a measurement can rely, and ending with a short description of the construction and operation of practical OFS. This Chapter has no intention whatsoever to be exhaustive, nor to cover all the aspects of OFS in detail. There are many high-quality handbooks that provide extensive coverage of the field, and we recommend consulting them for further reading [1-8].
