ABSTRACT

One of the guiding principles behind successful short-term visiting surgical team trips is equity among visiting care providers. For example, any team member should have the authority to cancel a case or initiate a thorough discussion of the risks and benefits of proceeding with the case. No team member should be pressured into doing something that is against his or her clinical judgment. The open practice of this principle also serves as a strong positive model for all involved, including less experienced team members and local caregivers. This principle should be defined and agreed upon prior to embarking on the trip.
