ABSTRACT

Encountering burn victims in a district or visiting hospital setting in a low-or middle-income country (LMIC) is an inevitable certainty for the visiting general or specialist surgeon. All too often, burn patients are found in the far corners of the hospital with little or no care. This unfortunate truth is not due to the staff’s choice or intentional neglect of these patients, but is usually the consequence of their intimidation and lack of training to care for a burn patient with severe pain and specialized wound care needs. The majority of surgeons visiting LMICs likely do not specifically intend on treating burns. This chapter aims to guide the general surgeon through the fundamentals of acute burn care surgery and focuses on the resources (or lack thereof) that you will likely encounter.
