ABSTRACT

There is perhaps no better way to begin a book considering thought, theory, and new understandings of our world than to consider Einstein. He ably demonstrated within his own field that true knowledge advancement was augmented by developing and using theory prior to, following, and indeed at times instead of, empirical research. While theorizing “instead of ” empirical research is a step too far for many, and the value of theory disconnected from experience or data is disputable for realworld living and practice, our premise is that rethinking the place of theory in rehabilitation, at every level, holds very real power for significant knowledge advance in rehabilitation. Taking inspiration from Einstein, a phrase that typifies our intentions for this book and the challenge we embrace is “Any fool can accept. The point is to question.”
