ABSTRACT

India is considered the homeland of the most diverse and rich traditional knowledge systems with unique cultural expressions that are directly or indirectly connected with ecology, the environment, and biodiversity, ranging from coastal, desert, and plains to mountainous regions. Syzygium cumini is an important medicinal plant used in both classical health tradition (CHT) and local health tradition (LHT) of India. Medicinal plants constitute one of the important components effectively used by the physicians of Ayurveda, not only for treating various disorders but also for preventive, promotional, and corrective purposes. The Unani system considers the human body to be composed of matter and spirit, and gives importance to the proper balance between the bodily and spiritual functions to maintain a harmonious life. The Siddha system owes its origin to the Dravidian culture, which is of the prevedic period. Siddha system has its literature written on palm leaves in the Tamil language.
