ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the research into the genetics of Mugilidae, with particular emphasis on the fl athead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, a worldwide species on which most research was performed over the years. Grey mullets are coastal species, found in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of the world. Several mullet species are of interest to capture fi sheries and aquaculture, for both the quality of their fl esh and for high priced processed products that are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, such as dry mullet roe (see Chapter 16-Crosetti 2015) and are locally known and appreciated in coastal zones.
