Natural resources have been studied, used, and exploited by mankind as food sources, for health applications, cosmetics, and others. It is estimated that a quarter of pharmaceutical products are derived from plants and in developing countries, which are rich in biodiversity but not technological leaders, a high percentage of the population depends on traditional botanical medicine for their primary care (Moran et al. 2001). This chemical, biological, and cultural richness provides opportunities: (i) knowledge can be used and be allowed to endure over time; (ii) technological processes can be developed to obtain and secure raw materials in suffi cient quantities and in sustainable ways; and (iii) the environment and the communities that live in the surroundings can be protected and conserved (Cotes et al. 2012).
