Exposure of human embryos in-vitro to VOCs may have harmful consequences on both the reproductive potential of the embryo as well as long-term child health. However, to date, no threshold values have been defined below which no adverse effects of individual VOCs or groups of VOCs can be expected. For the time being, VOC concentrations should therefore be kept at a minimum. Further research needs to urgently address the following issue: What VOCs at what concentrations may carry a risk of negatively impacting on human embryo health and developmental potential?
