Historical View on Roma Before outlining, even broadly, some dening aspects of Roma history, there is a need for clarication on the very name this ethnicity carries. In Romania, until the 1990s, the name they called themselves and that assigned by the Romanian population was Gypsy, a term that has become pejorative and has been replaced by the word Roma. e Romanian Encyclopedic Dictionary (Joja, 1966) published by the Romanian Academy denes the word Gypsy as follows:

e Explanatory Dictionary of the Romanian Language (Romanian Academy, Institute of Linguistics, 1998) published by the Romanian Academy, Institute of Linguistics “Iorgu Iordan” oers the following explanation for the word Gypsy:

In the United Kingdom, we meet them as the romanichal and gypsy, as in the United States, Canada, and Australia. In Spain and southern France, they bear the name calé (black), kaale in Finland, sinti in Germany, and manouches in the rest of France (Fraser, 1998, pp. 14-15).
