ABSTRACT

Tables 3.1 and 3.2 show the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) estimates and the IMF estimates of money laundered worldwide for a similar period of time (FATF 1988-2005; IMF 1996-2009). Considering rst the FATF estimate, the amount of worldwide money laundering is 2.0% in 1988, increased to 3.5% in 1996, and decreased to 3.0% in 2005. e IMF estimate has a range of between 2.0% and 5.0% over the period 1996 to 2009. In absolute terms, money laundered worldwide increased by 36.0% from 1996 to 2005, and by 33.0% from 2005 to 2009, which is quite a dramatic increase. ese FATF or IMF gures are more or less in a similar range.
