ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the nodes that are a part of the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It describes the principal task of a node like computation, storage, communication, and sensing/actuation and the components required to perform these tasks. The nodes can store energy, they can gather energy from the environment (through ultraviolet rays) and saved intelligently to control the operation of the nodes as well as other components in the network. An operating system like software is required to control the operation, which is described in the last section of this chapter with examples of sensor nodes. At the end of this chapter, the reader will have a clear understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the nodes in a WSN. It serves as the foundation for the following chapter, which discusses the options available on how individual sensor nodes are connected into a WSN.
