ABSTRACT

A forensic psychiatrist may be asked to evaluate a physician who is accused of illegally or negligently prescribing controlled substances in a variety of dierent contexts. ese may include (a) criminal prosecution, in which the physician was illegally prescribing controlled substances for distribution or personal use; (b) civil litigation proceedings (e.g., malpractice suit), where the prescribing physician fell below a reasonable standard of care in prescribing controlled substances, leading to damages for or death of a patient(s); or (c) state medical board investigations/proceedings regarding a physician’s prescribing of controlled substances and/or possible impairment because of abuse of controlled substances.
