ABSTRACT

Suicide prevention in correctional settings requires a wellcoordinated eort by mental health sta, corrections o- cers, and correctional administrators. e correctional environment creates special challenges that must be considered in suicide prevention policy and procedure. e correctional psychiatrist must be familiar with the standard clinical suicide risk assessment process, as well as critical nuances of risk assessment particular to correctional settings. Many evidence-based correctional suicide risk factors are known and must be considered during the screening process, as well as at clinically relevant times. is chapter will cover correctional suicide risk assessment and prevention from a psychiatric perspective, as well as the basic elements of correctional suicide prevention eorts from a systems perspective. Special clinical challenges in suicide prevention will also be discussed.
