ABSTRACT

Regarding drug delivery to the brain, the upload of therapeutic agents is seriously hindered by the BBB, thus being responsible for pharmacotherapy failure (even at the greatest drug doses). To beat the challenge, different strategies have been investigated to deliver therapeutic agents into the brain, e.g., disruption of the BBB, chemical delivery, biological transporters, molecular Trojan horses, and alternative routes of drug administration. Recent advances in molecular neuroscience and nanotechnology have contributed to the evolution of brain imaging and disease diagnosis, and to the effi cient delivery of drugs into the brain.
