ABSTRACT
Internal erosion occurs when soil particles within an embankment dam or its foundation are carried downstream by seepage flow.
Piping is the form of internal erosion which initiates by backward erosion, or erosion in a crack or high permeability zone, and results in the formation of a continuous tunnel called a “pipe” between the upstream and the downstream side of the embankment or its foundation.
